You must meet the following requirements for admission into the Master of Science in Information Science online program.

Admission Requirements:

  • Online application
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Cumulative GPA 3.0

MSIS Admission Requirements

Automatic Admission – Applicants who have all of the following will be automatically admitted by the Graduate School:**

  • Official transcripts documenting an earned undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited business school
  • Upper-level GPA of 3.0 or higher or, in the case of international applicants, a 3.0 or higher on the last 60 hours of completed work
  • Resume documenting the applicant's background, including work experience, along with three references and contact information for these references
  • Acceptable TOEFL/IELTS score report for international applicants or domestic applicants whose university/college studies were done outside the United States. TOEFL minimum score is 79, and IELTS minimum score is 6.5. Scores must be no more than two years old.

**Applicants who meet all the above criteria, except having a degree from an accredited business school—i.e., non-business background—can be automatically admitted with the provision that the ARSSB will review to determine the proper sequence of required prep modules needed for the student to take.

Applicants requiring further review – Applicants who do not satisfy the criteria required for Automatic Admission must also submit the following:

  • The submission of a score on the GRE or the GMAT, or the PAEP (for applicants from Mexico). Score must be from the last five years
  • Personal statement with 300 words or more describing career and personal goals
  • Two reference letters

International Transcript Evaluation:
TAMIU does their own foreign credential evaluations. Graduate School does not require third party evaluations nor are obligated to accept the results, or GPA calculations, if an evaluation is submitted. If an applicant submits an official evaluation, the evaluation does not replace official transcripts or certificates of graduation.

Note: The upper-level GPA is a calculated grade-point average of all upper level courses. Upper level is defined as all junior and senior level courses. Institutions use course numbers to make these designations. For example, TAMIU uses 3000 courses for junior level courses and 4000 courses for senior level courses.

Note: All student transcripts will be reviewed to determine if prep-module courses will be required or for previous successful completion of course equivalent. The two prep-modules are: (1) Data Analytics for Management and (2) Information Systems and Programming. Each 2 credit hour course can be taken concurrently and will be graded on a pass/fail basis. 2 SCH will be billed at $734.

Curriculum for the M.S. in Information Science online program is comprised of 11 courses (33 credit hours), including 27 credit hours of core courses and six credit hours of electives.

A student who does not possess an undergraduate degree from an AACSB-accredited program will be required to take prep-module courses that will help prepare you for your M.S. in Information Science journey. The two prep-modules are: (1) Data Analytics for Management and (2) Information Systems and Programming. Each course is worth two credit hours and graded on a pass/fail basis. Two school credit hours will be billed at $734.

This course introduces data analytics in business management that can assist leaders of organizations in managerial decision-making. The course provides an overview of a variety of tools and techniques used in the field of data analytics, introductory concepts in management, and the application data analytics in management. Students will summarize data and explore data mining techniques to be used to improve competitiveness, profitability, growth, and operational efficiency for organizations. This course presents a survey of concepts that will be explored more in-depth in subsequent courses in the MS IS program.

For students interested in a basic introduction to computing. Introduces how computers create, preserve, manipulate and communicate information and the concepts and tools used to that end. By doing so, students will be able to recognize computational problems and develop basic skill sets to solve future problems. Topics include the basics of computer and Internet hardware and software, creating web pages, algorithms and logic, basic programming, and solving problems.

An extended introduction to an advanced programming environment utilizing a business oriented programming language. The course will provide instruction in the advanced manipulation of data, and the programming of sophisticated data-intensive applications and file structures.

This course is designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of data/voice communication for both a technical and related managerial issues in an organizational environment. The course addresses network implementation and administration, telecommunications, client/server technologies, wireless technologies, standards and protocols, network management, strategic business applications and the managerial implications of globally distributed communications and information systems.

The objective of this course is to provide an integrated perspective of problem solving utilizing information technology in today s complex business environment, with a concentration on the processes, principles, guidelines, tools and techniques for systems analysis. Topics include information requirements identification, systems theory, systems modeling, project planning, documentation, current and proposed systems specification, and introduction to data modeling. Communication skills will be honed, and formal presentations are required.
