The Alternative Teaching Certification Program (ACP) at TAMIU is ideal for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field, substitute teachers, teachers on a temporary or emergency certificate, as well as individuals considering a career change who want to be certified to teach without having to earn another degree.

Upon completion of this online program, you will be able to:

  • Design and implement engaging learner-centered instruction that reflects mastery of core content, appropriate assessment practices, and evidence-based instructional strategies

You will learn from TAMIU faculty who are content and pedagogy experts and receive high-quality instruction and personalized attention during your coursework. During the internship that follows, you will also be supported by an experienced field supervisor who can assist you in content knowledge and instructional skills leading to increased student achievement.

Upon completion of the internship and exam, TAMIU will recommend you for Texas Education Agency (TEA) Certification so you can begin your teaching career right away. Credit hours from this ACP can also be applied toward the Master of Arts in Teaching program at TAMIU.

Take the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) exam

PACT candidates will take a new series of exams beginning January 27, 2020, pending adoption in October by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and approval in November by the State Board of Education (SBOE). Registration and appointment scheduling for these new PACT exams will open January 21, 2020. PACT candidates testing between now and January 26, 2020, should review the exam information and preparation materials for the TExES exams.

To apply for the Alternative Teacher Certification Program (ACP), you must hold a bachelor's degree and submit transcripts verifying a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

ACP online admission requirements
  • Submit an online application to the TAMIU Graduate School along with paying the $35 application fee
  • Submit Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) scores, for more information on PACT click here
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. Official transcripts from TAMIU do not need to be submitted.
  • Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education
    • Submit verification of minimum scaled scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet- Based Test (TOEFL iBT) of 24 for speaking, 22 for listening, 22 for reading, and 21 for writing or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to evidence English language proficiency if your undergraduate or graduate degree was not earned at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or at an institution of higher education in a country outside of the United States as listed
  • Minimum of 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours earned
  • Be eligible to work under an intern certificate
  • Must not be currently enrolled in another certification program
  • Complete the College of Education application
    • Submit the FERPA Form
    • Submit the Code of Ethics Form
    • Complete the Texas A&M International College of Education On-line Screening Survey

Announcement for Candidates Seeking a Standard Classroom Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education Grade Levels:

  • Core Subjects EC-6
  • Core Subjects EC-3
  • Core Subjects 4-8
  • ELAR 4-8 ELAR
  • Social Studies 4-8

To earn the above elementary grade level certificates without being required to pass the new Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam, candidates must have completed all program requirements including: passing TExES content exam, passing TExES PPR EC-12 exam, satisfactorily completing clinical teaching, having a Bachelor’s degree conferred, completed all mandated trainings, and have applied for and been recommend for their elementary level certification by December 31, 2020. Candidates who have not been recommended for their elementary level teaching certificate as of January 1, 2021 will be required to pass an additional exam: TExES Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam to earn their elementary grade level certificate. All elementary education candidates planning to enroll in Block III in spring 2021 and after must pass TExES Core Subjects EC-6 or TExES Core Subjects EC-3 and pass TExES STR prior to being admitted to EDCI 4693 (Student Teaching).

International Transcript Evaluation:
TAMIU does their own foreign credential evaluations. Graduate Studies does not require third party evaluations nor are obligated to accept the results, or GPA calculations, if an evaluation is submitted. If an applicant submits an official evaluation, the evaluation does not replace official transcripts or certificates of graduation.

Curriculum for the Alternative Teacher Certification Program (ACP) is comprised of four courses for a total of 12 credit hours.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course provides an introduction to education for initial certification, including a survey of theories and principles of child and adolescent development, current research on appropriate instructional strategies developmentally appropriate practices, and the impact on diversity and exceptionality on teaching and learning. Effective strategies for meeting the needs of English Language Learners will be emphasized.

Intended to assist pre-service teachers develop a sound understanding of EC-12 Learner-Centered Proficiencies; ethical and legal aspects of teaching; developmentally appropriate instructional practices, classroom management strategies, implications of diversity for teaching and learning, and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) implementation. Pre-service teachers will expand their knowledge and ability to use technology resources by incorporating various multimedia resources into their instructional activities to enrich teaching-learning experiences for students.

Course examines educational assessment; issues involving reliability, validity, and bias; construction of different types of tests, performance assessments, formal and informal assessment, and portfolios for specific purposes; use of assessment data for defined purposes; and best practices in educational assessment.

A survey of special education as seen from the perspective of normal psychomotor, cognitive, social, and behavioral norms with the focus on a basic overview of the federally determined categories of disabling conditions. Also includes an overview of the national legislation; litigation and advocacy trends; the Texas Rules and Regulations for Special Education; as well as research in the field.
